Top Tips When Purchasing Guttering

Thursday, 6 October 2011

Summary:
Those gutters aren't just for looks; they're a vital part of your home. They protect the foundation from the damaging effects of water pouring down around it from the roof. When it's time for a new gutter on your home there are more choices than you may realise. Here are some tips to choose the right gutter for your home, one that will look great as well as doing its job.

Body:

Wood guttering:

Vinyl and aluminium are better known, but wood is still an option. For some houses, like wood log homes and those covered with cedar shake shingles, they are the best option. They will require more maintenance over the years to keep them looking their best. They are also not a good option for people to install themselves. Proper installation requires a skilled touch and years of experience. They can be painted to match the exterior of the house, but the interiors will require regular waterproofing treatments to prevent rot.

Aluminium:

Inexpensive to purchase and simple to install, many homes are outfitted with aluminium gutters. They are typically powder coated in white to keep them looking sharp and so they will match the look of the house.

Vinyl:

Available in several different colours, vinyl gutters are great for areas that see high levels of rainfall. Rust-proof and maintenance free, they will last for years to come. They must be seamed properly to prevent leaks and can be cracked if they are struck by a falling limb in a storm.

Steel:
Galvanised guttering are a good option for homes, but they are losing popularity due to the availability of less expensive aluminium. However, they are not as prone to becoming dented in storms, making them the choice for people who are very particular.

Seamless Gutters:

If you do the gutters yourself you are going to have seams. These must be treated and they can fail if not properly installed. Seamless gutters avoid all the potential problems of seams. They must be done by professionals who come to your home with special equipment. The size and sections are cut to fit your home, eliminating seams and simplifying the entire process.

Guttering Accessories:

Leaves can block the downspouts, causing backups that can flow under your shingles and cause serious problems for your roof. Choose coverings for the gutters that will allow the water to flow through while preventing most leaves from falling in. Toys and balls that are tossed on the roof by playing kids also will not find their way into the gutters. While you will still have to clean the gutters once in a while, the chore will not have to be done as often and it will take less time.

Other guttering accessories include flexible downspouts that can be used to move diverted water further from the house. Avoid puddles and messy areas around downspouts by choosing water diverters that will spread the water out further or even send it around the corner where you want it.
When choosing gutters for your home take time to consider the architecture and the look you are trying to achieve. Gutters are as much of a finishing touch as shutters are. Choose your new gutters carefully to improve the appearance of your home.
