Newry man fined in court for headbutting police officer
Wednesday, 7 July 2010
A NEWRY man, who head-butted a police officer in the chest, has faced charges of disorderly behaviour and assault on police.
Robert Magee, of Edward Street, appeared at Newry and Mourne Magistrates' Court last Wednesday following an incident on 26 June.
The 39-year-old accused was spotted by police at Merchant's Quay shortly after 2am and was seen to be blocking the road.
It was noted that vehicles had to manoeuvre around him where he stood and officers, who were on patrol at the time, helped Magee off the road.
The Public Prosecution Service representative told the court that after being helped off the road, Magee became abusive towards officers and walked up to them "in an aggressive manner."
After ignoring warnings from the officers, he head-butted one of them in the chest. Magee was arrested for disorderly behaviour and assault on police and taken to the Banbridge Custody Suite.
Defence for Magee said the accused had previously been off alcohol but had, on this occasion, been drinking and the situation "spiralled out of control."
The solicitor explained that Magee had "no recollection" of assaulting the police officer and "did more injury to himself" due to the officer's body armour.
District Judge Paul Copeland bound Magee over to keep the peace for two years in the sum of £500.
He was further fined £150 for each count.
