Rathfriland basketball player launches Royal Mail Olympic Games stamps

RATHFRILAND was the setting for the latest stamp launch by the Royal Mail last week.
The latest launch coincides with the ongoing countdown to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and is the second in the Royal Mail's major series of sporting stamps.
The latest issue, subtitled 'On Track for 2012', is part of Royal Mail's role as an official licensee of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and features a fresh set of ten dynamic images which go on sale on 27 July - exactly two years before the opening ceremony in 2012.
To launch the stamps Rathfriland postman, David Millar teamed up with local potential Wheelchair Basketball competitor, Matthew Rollston who was putting in some extra training at Rathfriland Sports Centre.
Among the sports featured on the stamp set are established Olympic sports like hockey, shooting and football, alongside more recent additions including taekwondo and BMX cycling, and three Paralympic sports: rowing, table tennis and goalball.
Barbara Roulston, Head of external Relations, Royal Mail Group, said: "This series of stamps is creating a fascinating montage of the sports which make the Olympic and Paralympic Games one of the greatest events on the planet.
“We hope these stamps play their part in the countdown to 2012 and help to highlight both the sporting and cultural legacy of this wonderful event."
In total Royal Mail will issue 30 stamps in the run up to the 30th Olympiad and London 2012 Paralympic Games, with each stamp championing an Olympic or Paralympic sport.
Each stamp will feature either the London 2012 Olympic Games, or Paralympic Games logo, and the third and final set of stamps will be issued in 2011.
