A NEW Southern Area Young Carers project has been launched by Action for Children Northern Ireland, TASSK Healthy Living Centre and Newry and Mourne Carers Association.
Together the three organisations secured a three-year funding contract to provide supportive services and activities across three young carers projects in the Southern Trust area encompassing Craigavon and Banbridge, Armagh and Dungannon and Newry and Mourne localities.
Having secured this tender the Southern Area Young Carers project will offer young carers a listening ear, organise social and recreational activities and provide opportunities for them to meet other young carers and make new friends.
It will offer focused group work and also provide more intense one-to-one support to those children and young people who require this.
Louise Headley from Craigavon and Banbridge Young Carers Project said: "This project is based on partnership at all levels across the Trust in Craigavon and Banbridge, Armagh and Dungannon and Newry and Mourne localities.
“It is a holistic service tailored to the individual needs of a young person and their family. We believe it will raise awareness of young carers and their needs and change their lives for the better."
Connor Cochrane, aged 16, told guests at the launch: "Who would care if we didn't? We don't mind doing it but we need a break sometimes. This project gives me a chance to be a young person and to have fun with people who know that life isn't always a bed of roses."
