Nuns on the run for Mayobridge Oscars! thumbnailA cup of tea for the nuns between scenes!

IF YOU have been out and about in Mayobridge, you might have noticed the village looking a little different than normal.

Among some of the changes to normal village life over the past two weekends have included dozens of nuns, half-naked men and even a number of bridesmaids lurking around the Parish.

However don't be alarmed, it's not going to be a common occurrence!

These 'stars' have been in the village to film eight iconic films to raise funds for the local GAC.

Over 50 members of the local community have transformed themselves into the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper and not forgetting tea-lover Mrs Doyle to film eight films that will be shown at an Oscar-style event this Saturday (19 November) night.

Cindy Griffin from the OsKaR's organising committee told The Outlook that they started planning for this event before the summer.

“We started to recruit cast members at the end of August. We were able to get over 50 but it was not without its difficulties. Some people were shy but they were convinced to take part as there is no live event involved as it has all been pre-recorded.

“Each person taking part in the films has to raise a certain amount of fundraising and everyone has been making a real effort.

“The nuns held a curry day while others have come together to organise a golf day to increase the fundraising. It will all go towards meeting our target."

Five films were shot in the first weekend of November with the final three being filmed last week.

The amateur actors have put in hours of planning and rehearsing, with meticulous attention paid to the detail of costumes and make-up.

“It has taken a lot of commitment from everyone who has taken part," Cindy said.

The culmination of all this hard work will be this Saturday (19 November) when the actors join with family and friends in Hilltown INF Hall to view the results of their hard work for the first time.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the screen, regaling in their best attire will walk the red carpet in anticipation of getting their hands on one of the coveted golden Oscars statue.

“On the night each movie will be judged by a panel of judges and there will be an opportunity to speak to members of the cast of their experiences. Members of the audience can also vote for their favourite blockbuster," said Cindy.

Nerves will be high on the night as there will be a total of seven prizes up for grabs on the night, including Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Overall Best Movie.

“It is guaranteed to be a great social event for the club and local community. This is a one night only event so get your tickets from any cast member now, or see Mayobridge GAA Facebook page for more details."

So, if you want to see the Mayobridge version of The Full Monty, Father Ted, Bridesmaids, Taken, Sister Act, The Hangover, Father of the Bride or The Godfather then get your 15 tickets now.
