Plans for new hotel in Mourne thumbnailLiam Murphy and William Smith, directors, at the site of the proposed new 50-bed hotel on the Glasdrumman Road.

THE MOURNES area has received a boost to its tourism potential after permission for a 50-bed hotel was approved last week.

A hotel and 20 self-catering chalets could be built within the next few years on the outskirts of Glasdrumman.

It comes as outline planning permission was re-approved for a site for a hotel and tourist accommodation on the Glasdrumman Road, Annalong.

Outline planning permission for the hotel and tourist accommodation was approved back in 2005 and 2009 however plans were put on hold due to the economic downturn.

But plans are back on the table and last week councillors who sit on the planning committee of Newry, Mourne and Down Council re-approved the outline application.

Those behind the plans are local men, Liam Murphy and William Smith.

The two men are directors of Glasgiven Contracts, based in Glasdrumman, and believe now is the right time to progress with the ambitious plan.

Liam Murphy told The Outlook they are delighted that planning approval for the hotel and tourist accommodation has been renewed.

“Now the country is coming out of recession, we think there is an opportunity to provide more accommodation facilities in the Mourne area."

Mr Murphy believes their ideas are unique and that Mourne would become a tourism hotspot if the hotel is built.

“It [The Mournes area] is currently not well catered for in terms of accommodation and there is room for a development like this, which will be a 50-bed hotel and 20 chalets.

“The option of a hotel is quite a unique addition to the area. It adds another dimension to the whole accommodation facilities in the Mourne area.

“There are another few facilities that are coming to pass in the Mourne area in the next few years and this proposal will be an add-on or another facility for people to stay," said Mr Murphy.

The site for the proposed hotel is immediately south west of Glassdrumman at 230 Glassdrumman Road.

Mr Murphy says now that outline planning permission has been re-approved, they will be considering how to proceed over the next 12 months.

“In the short term we will probably wait a while as we are not fully out of recession yet.

“Brexit has created a bit of uncertainty so we will wait to see how that pans out. But we hope to make a decision on what is next within the next 12 months."

Planners approved the application with 28 conditions.
