THE FUTURE of Kilbroney Park Cafe is still unknown as the current cafe owners are in talks with the council.

The popular cafe announced on Facebook last week that they would be ceasing trading at the end of this month as their lease was not being renewed.

However as of Friday, a spokesperson for the landlords, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council said they are "working to address the legal matters arising".

The cafe owners were reportedly told by council that they have to vacate the premises on 30 December as their lease is not being renewed.

They admitted they were "shocked and saddened" by the decision as "during the past 13 years we have formed many friendships with our customers and suppliers".

The cafe, which has won the Mountain Bike Cafe of the Year award for three consecutive years, from 2013 to 2016, found it "disappointing that after 13 years the contract was not being renewed".

A spokesperson for Newry, Mourne and Down District Council told The Outlook: "Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is not closing the facilities at Kilbroney Forest Park Cafe.

“The current cafe operator's licence has expired and council is working with them to address the legal matters arising. It would be inappropriate to comment further on those discussions."
