Danny Boy Races at Feeny

Wednesday, 15 March 2017

CYCLISTS descended upon the quiet village of Feeny for the "Danny Boy Races". There was a great turnout on a cloudy grey Sunday morning.

Banbridge Cycling Club was well-represented. The A3 race had Marty Fitzpatrick who was going strong around the 12 mile laps and was in the front of the bunch but unfortunately had to retire after three laps due to mechanical issues.

Nathan Sturrock, also in this race, fought hard to the end by which time the rain was not taking time to come down. The course featured a long climb up to the finish which was a test for all riders with the very strong head wind, conditions were difficult at times.

The A4 race had the strongest representation from Banbridge this included Peter McBride, Davy Lavery, Wayne Graham and Stephen Fitzsimmons.

After the riders set off there was confusion when the lead car took the wrong turn this caused mayhem among the riders and the A4 race had to be restarted once again. Peter McBride was going strong at the front of the bunch but unfortunately with cramped legs he fell back but still managed to finish the race.

Davy Lavery and Wayne Graham both had a great race and fought the headwind, rain and odd bit of sunshine to finish the race just after the main bunch. Stephen Fitzsimmons unfortunately had to retire after three laps.

The masters race featured BCC's Brian Hannon and Ian Cochrane both riders were going strong and showing great potential staying close to the front of the bunch, however with ever increasing climbs and the weather the guys dropped back but still managed to finish in respectful eighth and ninth place, so well done to Ian and Brian.
