New community gym opened thumbnailLiam McAvoy and Sheila Kelly, development officers, hold the ribbon while Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick, chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council cuts it to officially open the new community gym.

KILCOO GAC officially opened their state-ofthe- art gym on Wednesday evening (5 April) and what a fantastic looking fitness facility it is.

The new gym, situated at the club's ground, is the result of many months of hard work, dedication, commitment and fundraising by the development committee, fundraising committee and the Kilcoo senior footballers.

Members of the local community and members of Kilcoo GAC turned out in force to celebrate the official opening of the club's success on securing funding for the new community gym.

Sheila Kelly welcomed everyone to the event, which was attended by, Gillian Fitzpatrick, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, local councillors Laura Devlin, Stephen Burns and Willie Clarke, MLA Chris Hazzard and Margaret Ritchie MP.

Down County Development Officer, Willie Gribben together with Kilcoo GAC architect, Mr John McElroy were all in attendance and also present was Kilcoo's own Parish Priest, Canon Sean Rogan.

Both development officers, Sheila and Liam McEvoy are delighted with the success in being awarded funding towards the new community gym.

The project received funding from NM&DDC Financial Capital Call 2016/2017 for the sum of 17,412, together with funding from the Big Lottery, 'Awards for All' for the sum of 10,000 for all the gym equipment.

The aims and objectives of the project met with the councils four priority themes, such as improving health and well-being, safety and good relations, economic development regeneration and tourism together with environment and spatial needs in the Kilcoo area.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Chairperson Gillian Fitzpatrick cut the ribbon at the official opening.

"I think we can all agree that with this community project, those aims have certainly been achieved, " she said.

"The completion of the construction of the community gym represents the culmination of a lot of hard work from a committed group of people, who were determined to see this project happening. " She also said she was honoured and delighted to be invited to the official opening.

The well-equipped new gym is expected to be of benefit to both the club and the community.

Kilcoo GAC didn't set out just to have it specifically for the senior football team, they set out to have it for the community and they are confident that it will be a great success.

Kilcoo is a typically rural club with scarce resources, and the new gym was a necessity for the club 's members and all sections of the Kilcoo community.

The new gym will offer excellent value for money together with providing a valuable sporting, leisure and recreational facility for the whole community of the Kilcoo rural area.

Chairman, Terry O'Hanlon concluded the evening 's events by congratulating the hard work and endeavors of everyone involved in making the dream of a community gym facility a reality.

A special thank you and congratulations were sent to Darren McConville and Niall Morgan for their hard work, commitment and drive in sourcing all of the equipment and fitting out of the gym.

He also thanked Councillor Fitzpatrick and the Big Lottery Fund for providing their financial assistance, without which the community gym project would not have been possible.

Terry thanked all the politicians, county development officer, the media and the local community of Kilcoo for attending and supporting the official launch of the new community gym.

A special thank you was made to County Down Rural Community Networks, Briege Jennings for her continued rural development support with all of Kilcoo GAC developments and strategic plans.

CDRCN helps organisations just like Kilcoo GAC to achieve its aims in making life better for our members, for the local people and our community.

Terry concluded the evening by thanking Martell and Maureen McEvoy for providing a beautiful display of delicious sandwiches and refreshments for everyone.
