HOPES are high that a new business is setting up shop within the former Stewart&James building in Rathfriland.

The hardware shop trading as Stewart&James Mica Hardware entered administration and closed after 80 years' trading back in March 2016.

It was put on the market shortly after the closure with a 'sale agreed' sign appearing outside the vacant premises late last year.

The empty shell of the building and the loss of the rural town's only hardware store was keenly felt by locals who are taking an interest in recent developments within the building.

It has remained empty since the closure, however, in recent days there has been evidence of shopfitting within the building. It is believed a new independent hardware store is set to open at the site.

A new anchor store for Main Street would be a welcome development, signalling a shot in the arm for Rathfriland's retail trade and a jobs boost.

Full details of the nature of the shop will be revealed in the coming weeks.
