Missing parts delay maiden ferry voyage

Missing parts delay maiden ferry voyage thumbnail The maiden voyage of the new ferry, linking Greencastle and Greenore, was due last Thursday (1 June) however it was postponed just two days before .

THE first sailing of the new Scenic Carlingford Ferry was postponed last week.

The Outlook was due to attend this 'familiarisation' and be one of the first to set sail on the new ferry alongside local representatives, business groups and special guests.

However, the sailing was cancelled for what were described as "safety reasons" due to a delay in the delivery of navigational lights and fender.

Frazer Ferries had not publicly advertised an exact date in June for the first sailing for the public only stating it would be in June.

However, the private company behind the ferry say it could now be a few weeks away.

"We are disappointed but not downhearted. We were eager to have the service operational and for you to join us on our first voyage, on the first of the month. It has been such a terrific capital project so we can be nothing but happy.

"Our ambitions are almost fulfilled, with the piers in Greencastle and Greenore reaching completion; the ferry in port looking wonderful; the captains and crew running trials on the lough and almost all operational elements in place.

"However, we of course want every detail to be perfect and everything to be in place and we have encountered an unforeseen delay in taking delivery of some specialised technical products which must be installed before operations can begin - navigational lights and fender. After all safety must be our main priority.

"Even though the Scenic Carlingford Ferry represents a €9.75 million/8.5 million private investment, when bespoke products are unexpectedly delayed, sometimes you just have to wait.

"This project has taken almost 10 years to come to fruition and we will just have to be patient and wait a few more weeks," a Frazer Ferries spokesman said.
