THE GREENCASTLE to Greenore ferry has still not been launched to the general public.

Delays have beset the Scenic Carlingford Ferry which has been many years in the planning. A promotional campaign which featured posters around the Mournes publicised the launch to be in June.

However it doesn't look like that time scale will be achieved and management maintain the ferry will be fully operational as soon as a final piece of equipment is in place.

The assurance comes as some aired concerns that the ferry had "run aground" at the weekend at Greencastle.

Concerns were raised about the gap where the ferry meets the slipway.

However, a spokesperson for Scenic Carlingford Ferry said the awkward angle was due to routine maintenance work and not reflective of an issue with the ferry.

"Last weekend, the Scenic Carlingford Ferry team took advantage of the high spring tides to conduct some routine maintenance work on the ferry as they await the delivery of bespoke navigational aids.

"The ferry is a flat hulled vessel which allows it to rest on the base of the vessel." Meanwhile, chief executive Pamela Houston says it remains a waiting game.

"We are making good use of our time as we wait for the final infrastructure items to be completed.

"We are carrying out ongoing maintenance and training drills with all our crew and captains.

We will have a passenger service fully operational as soon as we can get that final piece of equipment in place. We are looking forward to getting into service and allowing the public to access the sensational views of the Mourne and Cooley Mountains from the middle of the Lough."

If you've already bought a ticket online: "The early bird tickets will remain valid for 90 days from date of purchase but we are happy to accommodate anyone requiring a refund." Scenic Carlingford Ferry can be contacted via Facebook or www.carlingfordferry.com
