John Buller ‘unstoppable’

Wednesday, 19 July 2017

THE Cycling Ulster team riding the 2017 Junior Tour of Ireland consisted of Conor Halvey, Brendan Flanagan, Robbie Doherty, Liam Wilson and Banbridge CC's John Buller.

The team were faced with six days of racing covering around 100km each day.

With such status the race attracted high competition from teams all over the world, travelling from the USA, South Africa, Netherlands, the UK along with the Irish local teams.

Banbridge CC have had great success in the past at the junior tour of Ireland with Matthew Teggart winning a stage of the race a few years ago and winning the overall points classification jersey in the same year.

During the six days of racing John, with the help of his team, managed to snatch two stage wins.

Stage two, covering 109km in Co Clare, concluded in a bunch sprint to the line and John came out strong on top. This meant he gained maximum points in the points classification where he would wear the green points jersey heading into stage three.

Day three meant stage three. The race again finished in yet again another bunch sprint for the line as the Irish National Team controlled the race-reducing attacks and breakaways for their team member Ben Walsh who was wearing the Yellow leaders jersey of the race. In this stage John finished sixth and lost the points jersey to stage winner from South Africa.

John's second stage win came on the closing day of the race (Sunday) where the race covered 77km. John was able to show his strength in the sprint once again as the race came to an end in Ennis, Co Clare.

The Cycling Ulster team had a fantastic weeks racing with top results throughout the week in each stage and finishing in fourth place overall.

A massive thanks has to go out to the support for the team and Banbridge Cycling Club members who travelled down to see the race on the final days.
