Show-stopping sausages! thumbnailCunningham Butchers in Kilkeel

A KILKEEL butcher will appear on BBC One's The One Show next Tuesday night (8 August).

James Cunningham Jnr of family-run Cunningham Butchers, will swap the chopping block for the small screen as he investigates if sausages really have lost their sizzle.

Joined by a professor and chef, camera crews filmed James earlier this summer as he cooked a range of sausages in the Silent Valley, including his own award-winning pork, tomato and chilli continental variety.

The Mourne man will also appear live on the show from Cushendall as he cooks his own sausages alongside the presenters.

James says his appearance on The One Show came about after the fourth-generation firm scooped the title of 'Best Butchers Shop in the UK' earlier this year.

He said: "We had previously won the 'Regional Retail Winner for Northern Ireland' and 'Best Butchers in Ireland' at the Butchery Excellence Ireland annual awards and these awards had caught the eye of the show's producers.

"They approached us to take part in the programme and filming took place over one day earlier in the month mostly in the Silent Valley and they then came back to film a wee bit in the shop and speak to our customers.

"We are only the third ever butcher in Northern Ireland to win the UK title for the best butcher and no-one in Northern Ireland has ever won this title twice." Since 2010, Cunningham Butchers in Kilkeel have grown their workforce from three members of staff to over 50.

In business from 1919, they have also recently renovated its premises - opening a new bistro and fresh food hall which has scooped multiple awards.

James continued: "The new shop has attracted a lot of interest and we have found that people are coming from all over to try the food and we have a team of chefs working in the kitchen due to our major expansion with the company.

"It has been such a surreal experience and the likes of appearing on The One Show is just something that doesn't happen everyday.

"I am looking forward to the programme being aired and it means a lot as a fourth generation family business. Come and see for yourself and visit the beautiful Mournes and try our food."
