OVER 49 acres of Crocknafeola Forest near Attical are being felled.

The chopping down of the mature forest being witnessed at present is the first stage of harvesting and regeneration of this forest which will be replanted, according to the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA).

Explaining what is going on within the forest, a spokesman said: "Tree felling which extends to approximately 20 hectares is currently taking place at Crocknafeola and is the first part of the planned harvesting and regeneration of this forest area.

The management at Crocknafeola Forest, including the current harvesting and subsequent regeneration, is undertaken consistent with good forestry practice.

"Regeneration will follow when harvesting is completed.

This will contribute to the provision of multi-use objectives from the forest, creating public benefits in the local area."

The regeneration will involve replanting the site while the "multi-use objectives" relate to the sustainable management of the forest for the purposes of timber production, recreation and public access, protection of wildlife and environment.
