Millvale Animal Sanctuary to cease animal rescues after 20 years.

Wednesday, 1 November 2017

AFTER more than two decades, a local animal rescue sanctuary will not be taking in any more animals.

The announcement that Millvale Animal Sanctuary on the Millvale Road, Ballyward will effectively close to new animals was made last week.

However, its proprietor Sharon Quinn says animals currently in her care will remain looked after.

The news was met with sadness by many with people paying tribute to her dedication over the years.

"Sorry to hear that Sharon is stepping back but can understand fully her reasons for this decision. She works so hard and has always been totally dedicated to her role in the welfare of animals, you will be sadly missed Sharon and have helped me on many occasions over the years.

"You're an amazing person, take care of yourself," one person wrote on Facebook.

It is understood the decision was reached after what has been described as "a catalogue of events over the past few months" which have "drained the life and soul from Sharon".

On a post shared online on her behalf, it stated "she has decided she has given enough and now, leaving the egotistical politics of animal rescue firmly outside her gates, she will now concentrate on the permanent residents at Millvale".

"These animals are the old unwanted animals - deaf, blind, incontinent, disabled and animals with conditions requiring regular veterinary attention etc.

"There are the dogs with behavioural problems that leave them unsuitable for a home environment.

"While there are still animals at Millvale until they live out their natural life, Sharon will still need your support financially and I know there are many, many loyal supporters of Sharon who won't let her down and will continue with support that enables Sharon to continue the work she does.

"Working 24/7, 365 days a year Sharon has given her all and done so quietly without seeking attention nor praise, priority has always been given to the animals' welfare," said the post.

The Millvale Animal Sanctuary page is still live online as it will "remain as an avenue to highlight dogs needing homes, private rehomes and lost and found animals".
