LOCAL football and hockey fans will abandon their traditional Boxing Day dinners to support two of their teams after they made it to Boxing Day finals in their respective sports.

Kilkeel Hockey Club's Men's First team made history last Wednesday (22 November) evening when they beat rivals Instonians to make it through to the Boxing Day Kirk Cup final for the first time in their 93-year history.

However, the winner of the Bob Radcliffe semifinal game between Rathfriland Rangers and Valley Rangers remains unknown. The semi-final took place on Friday (24 November) at Bignian Park in Kilkeel with a Boxing Day final spot up for grabs.

Despite The Whites running out a 6-2 scoreline in their favour, they have not said they will be progressing to the Boxing Day final. Instead both teams have cryptically 'wished each other well' for the rest of the season.

Whatever the outcome, a local football team will still be playing in the Bob Radcliffe Boxing Day final, which will be played in Dungannon. It just remains to be seen if it is Valley or Rathfriland Rangers!

Meanwhile, Kilkeel Hockey Club looked like they were on their way out when they conceded a goal in the second minute.

And they were trailing by two at the interval after William Robinson's penalty corner drag flick found the top right-hand corner.

But two goals in a minute in the last quarter, from Eddie Agnew and David Finlay, forced the shuttles shoot-out and it was the Mournemen who held their nerve to go through 3-1 and earn the chance to take on Mossley in the decider.

The Mournemen now face Mossley in the Christmas Holiday showpiece.
