7up for sparkling Whites. thumbnailRathfriland’s hat-trick scorer, James Costello with the match ball

ON the eve of Christmas, the Whites returned to league action to play out only their fifth league game of the season.

Rathfriland Rangers...7

Mid-table Malachians were the opposition but the Whites took all three points from this one and scored seven goals in the process.

Manager Black started with a familiar 11, with the returning Ross Black coming back in after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The game was only 10 minutes old when disaster struck for the Whites.

Johnny Roy's attempted header back to the 'keeper was weak and the home striker latched onto the pass with a cool finish passed Rathfriland's Gracey.

Rathfriland had started the game brightly and the fab four in attack were on their metal with Coulter, Scannell and Teggart linking up with front Man Costello.

It was Teggart who should have got the Whites level when he was put through with the 'keeper but he dragged his effort wide.

Rathfriland got their deserved equaliser in the game when that man, Johnny Roy made amends for his mistake with a beautiful ball into the box, which Darryl Evans headed into the net.

The Whites then had a golden opportunity to go in front when Costello and Scannell played a lovely 1-2, which resulted in Costello striking the post when well placed.

Costello made up for that miss minutes later when Teggart cut inside from the left and slid him through against the 'keeper, with Costello coolly slotting home to nose the Whites in front.

Half time 1-2.

Something was brewing in the Rathfriland changing room with a real positive vibe in the side for the second half and boy they didn't disappoint.

The first goal of the second half came when the deadly duo of Costello and Scannell again linked up. Scannell played the ball into Costello's path inside the box for the big man to swivel on a six pence and slot past the 'kee per with his left foot.

3-1 soon became 3-2 when the Malachians' winger floated a cross into the area for their striker to nod home unchallenged from six yards.

Gracey then pulled off an excellent save to prevent another Malachians goal when their backs were up.

What hope Malachians had was soon squashed though when Scannell again linked play and slid in Teggart to drive an effort into the Malachians net to bring the score to 4-2.

The Whites were next to notch another goal on the scoreline when Roy overlapped on the right and cut back a cross for Costello to touch past a defender and angle a shot across the 'keeper and into the net to complete his hattrick.

Rathfriland rang the changes with Clyesdale and McConville coming in for McAlinden and Teggart.

At 5-2 the game was dead and buried but the Whites kept advancing.

Darryl Evans was next to have an effort on goal which took a deflection, but a dubious goals panel would be kind to the big centre half and give him the credit for the goal.

The final goal of the game arrived when Shay McConville broke out the dancing shoes and shimmied, then moonwalked his way into the box and drove a shot home past the despairing 'keeper.

Overall a resounding win in terms of scoreline but a very important one to mark the Whites' return to league action.

Team: Gracey, Roy, McAlinden, Evans, Graham, Coulter, Black, Edgar, Teggart, Scannell and Costello.
