MMRT assists injured walkers. thumbnail Members of the MMRT assisted an injured female walker last week.

THE Mourne Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT) was called out to two calls over the course of last week.

Last Thursday (28 December) afternoon, the MMRT received a request to assist an injured female walker on Slieve Donard at 3.40pm. The walker had taken a slip in the region of The Saddle and sustained a lower leg injury.

"The team responded and met with the casualty who had been assisted into the Valley by other walkers. After an initial assessment, the team provided treatment to assist the casualty to walk down supported.

"Due to pain levels, this wasn't possible and the casualty was transferred to a stretcher for evacuation.

"On entering Donard Forest, the casualty was transferred to a team vehicle via which she was transported to Donard Park," said the MMRT.

A total of 18 members responded and the team stood down at 6.48pm.

"A note of thanks to the various walkers who stopped and provided essential assistance to the casualty, including making the initial 999 call," the MMRT said.

Two days before this incident, six members of the team attended what was a "straight forward" call to assist a female walker who collapsed on the summit of Slieve Donard.

"A team co-ordinator was able to contact the party, make an initial assessment and give advice.

"With the aid of the advice, the party was able to provide initial treatment to the casualty. With some recovery, the casualty was able, with the support of her party, to make her way downhill.

"Responding team members met with the casualty and party on the descent route, carried out a further assessment, provided further treatment and evacuated by team Landrover to Donard Park.

"Thanks to NI Ambulance Service for their assistance at the early stages of the call," said the MMRT.
