A PRIME piece of industrial space in Rathfriland has been sold to a local buyer.

The former MJM site on the Newry Road attracted sizable interest from investors and went for over its asking price at a private auction last week.

It is believed the premises went under the hammer for a price in the region of 400,000.

The site is currently home to polymer recycling and extrusion company, Plaswire which is moving to a new premises in Lurgan.

The sale included all warehouse space, office units and yard.

Commenting on the sale, a MJM Group spokesman said: "As we continue to expand our operations in Newry we took the opportunity to sell the site we previously occupied in Rathfriland.

"This site is a fantastic prospect for a manufacturing or warehouse-based business and we wish the new owners every success in their new facilities."

Local man, Brian McConville started his multi-million-pound business empire at the site 35 years ago before moving to a purposebuilt site at Carnbane Business Park in Newry in 2008.

A leading international specialist in cruise ship refurbishment, refit and interior fit-out services, MJM Group has previously been contracted to work for major clients including BT, P&O Cruises and Hilton Hotels and Resorts.
