Locals to organise fleadh in Hilltown.

Wednesday, 28 February 2018

IT'S a fair, but not as we know it.

Hilltown was once synonymous with the Boley Fair but this year it's set to become known for a fleadh.

The countdown is now on to the inaugural Hilltown Fleadh and organisers are hard at work to make it a spectacular event.

The fleadh has been in the planning for approximately eight months, after it was decided something was needed to bring the town together.

Mark Fegan and BJ Killen took up the mantle of putting together a musical feast for Hilltown.

"The Boley Fair has not been running for a number of years, so BJ and I came up with the idea of the fleadh," said Mark.

"We had thought about taking up the Boley Fair again but it was too much of a commitment, so we stripped it back to a fleadh." While it has been hard work, Mark said they have enjoyed putting it together.

"It has mainly been the two of us organising it, but there have been others involved, Shea Fegan, Tara McNeill, Liam Arthurs, Seamus Parr and Lorraine Fegan have all been helping out where they can," he said.

Set to take place over Easter weekend, a number of different acts have been confirmed, including Warrenpoint Comhaltas, the Kelly family, Boys o' the Bann, Joanne Grant and friends, The Bridge Boys, the Murray family and Henry Mc- Donald and friends, with more acts to be revealed.

"It is all going to be in-house, so the venues will be the INF Hall, the GAC club and different pubs in Hilltown," said Mark.

And he said they have received great feedback from people and are looking forward for it to come together.

"Everyone has been very positive about it and they are very excited. They felt there was a lull and the Boley Fair was a loss to the town, so they are getting very excited about it," he said.

The first ever Hilltown Fleadh will run from Saturday, 31 March to Monday, 2 April.
