Annalong ....4 Gilford Crusaders.......1 ANNALONG were at home on Saturday in their penultimate league game and comprehensively put Cursaders to the sword.
The home side were lively from the start and it took only 11 minutes to go in front when Stephen Burden was pulled down in the box and got up to send the keeper the wrong way from the spot. He nearly added a second but with the keeper beaten his half volley hit the post and rebounded to safety.
Gilford got back into the game when, following a free kick, the ball was put away in the resultant goalmouth scramble and this left the half time score 1-1.
The second half was mainly one-way traffic with the defence of Mark Nicholson, playing well in the unfamiliar position of right back, Andrew Nugent, Richard Gordon and Gareth Graham snuffing out any threat and leaving keeper John Sloan a virtual spectator. The midfield of Ryan Newell, Johnny McCulla, Matthew McConnell and Andrew McCallister, who was having one of his best games in an Annalong shirt, held the upper hand giving Burden and Jason McCulla plenty of support. McCallister scored the second when the keeper spilled Burden's free kick and he was on it like a flash to hit the roof of the net.
Minutes later Jason McCulla took a quick throw in to Burden whose overhead kick found McConnell in the box and he coolly slotted home No 3. McConnell was causing all sorts of problems with his deliveries into the box from free kicks and from one of these Nugent got on the end of it and bundled the ball home for No 4.
Tomorrow evening (Wednesday) Annalong play their final game of the season at home to Damolly with a 7pm kick-off.
