A NEW Zealand family with roots in Ballyroney is featured in the next episode of Paul and Nick's Big Food Trip New Zealand.

Top chefs and great friends Paul Rankin and Nick Nairn continue their tour of New Zealand on UTV next Wednesday night (6 June) at 8pm with the seventh episode in the eight part series.

The series sees the dynamic duo embarking on a culinary road trip following the trail of the Ulster Scots who travelled and settled in New Zealand, and on Wednesday night, the chefs are in Dunedin in the south island where Presbyterian minister, Rev Rutherford Waddell settled.

Originally from Ballyroney near Rathfriland, he helped bring about important social reforms in New Zealand.

They cook for Seán Bresnahan who is the curator of the Otago Settlers Museum in Dunedin where they pick up Rev Waddell's story.

And for cooking inspiration the chefs gets to grips with an amazing tool for digging clams, visit a deer farm and taste craft chocolate.

All eight episodes take in the breathtaking vistas and farmlands of New Zealand where Paul and Nick cook fantastic meals for the descendants of the Ulster Scots and Scottish pioneers who helped build this great country.

Their journey takes them the length of the country, from the tropical climate of Auckland in the north, to the more mountainous climes of Dunedin and Queenstown in the south.

Both chefs get to meet local people with historical connections to Irish and Scottish immigrants who settled in New Zealand, bringing with them a traditional Ulster-Scots knowledge of food.

Terry Brennan, Head of News and Programmes, UTV said: "Paul and Nick's Big Food Trips are hugely popular with our audience, and this New Zealand trip is going down really well with viewers.

In this series they visit both North and South islands, meeting amazing food producers and cooking special meals for some Ulster- Scots descendants which our viewers are sure to enjoy."

Paul and Nick's Big Food Trip New Zealand is produced by Waddell Media and received funding from Northern Ireland Screen's Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund. The programme is sponsored by Harry Corry.
