Royal couple’s Kilkeel titles add momentum to Harbour event. thumbnailKilkeel Harbour

A SPECIAL event in the planning for Kilkeel has taken on added meaning following one of the wedding presents bestowed on Prince Harry by the Queen.

A musical evening is set to take place at Kilkeel Harbour on Wednesday, 20 June with a number of local acts and musicians invited to take part.

One of the special guests announced to perform on the evening is the Band of the Royal Marines.

The added symbolism to this is Prince Harry has been Captain General of the Royal Marines since last year.

Significantly in addition to this, he was named as Baron Kilkeel ahead of his wedding to Meghan Markle on Saturday, 19 May.

Baron Kilkeel was one of the titles bestowed on Prince Harry by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth.

It was newly created to allow the prince to hold a Northern Ireland title.

It is understood to have been discussed privately between the Queen and Prince Harry, however the Queen was the one who chose the title.

And it is the link between these which has organisers of the special event in the Mourne town hoping the new Baron Kilkeel might pay a visit to the town.

One of the organisers, Alan McCulla told The Outlook the event was not planned as a reaction to the new barony but has been "in the diary since January".

"The schedule is still being finalised," said Mr McCulla.

"It will involve the entire Kilkeel community."

Revealing the response to the event has been "very positive"

Mr McCulla said the Baron and Baroness of Kilkeel were "aware of the event".
