Slane win Christmas friendly against Derriaghy

Wednesday, 4 January 2012

Moneyslane First team ....3.
Derriaghy ....1.

MONEYSLANE'S first team hosted Amateur 1A side Derriaghy last week in a friendly and it was a good run out for the players, also giving manager Glen Moffett and Neil McCullough a chance to look at a few new faces.
The game started off at a slow pace with both teams trying to find a gap in each other's rear guard. Boyd, O'Neill, Weir and Wilson were all at the top of their game at the rear for 'Slane, working well as a unit, with Bingham sitting just in front of the back four.
On 20 minutes, Fry pulled off a great save to deny the striker with a superb finger tip save to push the ball around the post at full stretch.
Ervine tried his luck from 30 yards out with a well hit shot but the 'keeper saved well to push it wide for a 'Slane corner. It was delivered into the danger zone where Anderson connected but it went over the top.
Bingham was instrumental in midfield alongside Lockhart and the pair combined with Lockhart rounding two players and hitting straight at the 'keeper. Bingham hit from distance but the 'keeper saved well as 'Slane upped the tempo.
O'Neill cleared off the line for Slane and right on the stroke of half time a cross was floated in from the right by the visitors and the striker who was clearly two yards off side headed home and the ref allowed the goal.
It wasn't long into the second half before 'Slane were level when new signing Joel McConnell tapped the ball into the net from close range, much to the delight of the large crowd who came out on a bitterly cold day at Cheney Park.
Midway through the half 'Slane took the lead when persistent pressure resulted in a corner and Lockhart swung the ball to the back post where Bingham rose the highest to nod off the post and he followed in for the rebound to volley into the roof of the net.
Cromie, Hanna and Adair all entered the fray and they gave a good account of themselves, chasing every ball.
Adair hit just wide from outside the box and right at the end Cromie headed a wonder goal at the far stick with power and precision to beat the 'keeper and round off an excellent performance by Slane.
This was a good run out for the 'Slane and man of the match on the day was David Boyd at left back as Moneyslane look to acquaint themselves with the surface at Cheney Park ahead of the BanClassico, which is expected to be played some time this month.
Team: Fry, Boyd, O'Neill, Wilson, Bingham, Weir, Davenport, McConnell, Anderson, Ervine, Lockhart, Cromie, Adair, Hanna.
