A busy Christmas at Ballyvea

Leslie Chambers presents the Samuel Chambers Memorial Shield to the winner Aaron Smyth.
THE Samuel Chambers Memorial shoot, which took place at Ballyvea on Tuesday, 27 December, saw a magnificent turnout of shooters.
Fifty one shooters in total turned up, which resulted in 41 lines being shot over the day's proceedings.
There were two shields up for grabs, the Samuel Chambers Memorial Shield for classified shooters and the Club Shield for unclassified and club shooters.
Eleven straights were recorded during the day with 10 of these coming from the classified shooters and Warren Quinn hitting the straight from the unclassifieds.
Andrew Charleton continued his good run of form and it was Andrew who recorded the first 20/60, followed closely by Willie Robinson, George Hall, David McBride, Leonard Graham, Damien Corovan, Ronald Sloan, David Henning, Aaron Smyth and Brian Robinson.
The final was shot over three lines and, when the dust settled, it was Aaron Smyth who came out in first place with another 20/60.
Second place had to be decided by a single barrel line and, after a tight affair, Damien Corovan was assured of second place with 19/57. Third place eventually went to David McBride after a sudden death battle with George Hall.
In the unclassified section Warren Quinn came out in first place with his straight. Second and third place was settled by a full round of 20 targets. It was Johnny Main who finished with 17/50 to take second place and Charlie McConnell on 17/49 to take third.
Also up for grabs was the Inter-Club Trophy between Rathfriland and Ballyvea clubs. Rathfriland had a 24 point lead going into the Samuel Chambers shoot but the Ballyvea members excelled themselves, with their top nine shooters dropping just four points whereas Rathfriland members dropped 41 points, leaving Ballyvea with a 13 point victory.
Chairman Davy Megaw thanked all who had made the day a great success, those who had supplied prizes, helped refereeing, filled traps and not forgetting those who had looked after the catering and kept everyone well fed.
