Kilmore Rec’d thumbnailScott Ward goes flying in a midfield battle.

Kilmore Rec 5, Rathfriland Rangers 1. RATHFRILAND Rangers made the journey to Premier League team Kilmore Rec on Saturday to lock horns in an end to end Intermediate Cup tie at Crossgar's Robert Adams Park.
On an uneven and poor surface Kilmore were flattered by their 5-1 scoreline as Rathfriland had numerous chances to hit the net.
Rangers actually were a goal to the good as early as the second minute when the ball broke to Glenn Waddell on the edge of the box and he scored with a low shot to open the scoring.
It could easily have been 2-0 within seconds had Scott Ward just failed to connect from a close range pullback.
The big and bustling home side then came out of the blocks with a blitz of three goals in a 10 minute period. Firstly they levelled when a high ball into the box fell on the six yard line and the No10 volleyed the bouncing ball into the net.
Kilmore went 2-1 ahead shortly after when, from a corner, the big No9 rose and powerfully headed the ball into the top corner and then the same player made it 3-1 when he drilled a super left foot shot at an angle just inside the post for the best goal of the game.
Rathfriland's outlet of Ryan Evans was a real threat to Rec and he twice crossed superbly with Scott Ward going close and then Ally Wilson saw a brilliant header just skim the crossbar.
Kilmore's fourth came from another strong header and another followed soon after when Rippon's failed clearance from a strong challenge rebounded into the empty net, leaving the half time scoreline at 5-1.
Rathfriland's second half performance saw them not conceding any more goals and also create a number of chances but a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping kept the gap in the scoreline.
Stevie Coulter had a low shot pulled across the face while Ally Wilson also went close - Coulter then saw another attempted lob just miss the target while Evans and Beck also were in the mix for shots at goal.
At the other end Kilmore were always a threat on the break but Waddell and Aaron Marks were strong in their defensive duties. Connor Rippon then pulled off a fine fingertip save over the crossbar but the home 'keeper was not going to be outdone when he saved an Ally Wilson penalty in the dying minutes.
The game finished 5-1 to Kilmore Rec but it has to be said that the scoreline somewhat flattered the home side with Rathfriland the better side in the second period.
Kilmore were big, strong and physical with their finishing in the first half clinical, which ultimately was the difference in the two sides.
