Points shared in second round match

Wednesday, 23 November 2016

ON Saturday (19 November) the firsts took on Amateur League Premier Division side, Malachians in the second round of this season's Intermediate Cup.

Moneyslane FC ...1
Malachains FC ...1

Manager Thornton was without nine of his first team panel for various reasons, so the pack had to be shuffled somewhat.

The game got underway with the visitors seeing a lot of the ball in the opening exchanges without troubling the Slane rearguard. The first chance of the afternoon fell to Kingsmore, who picked up the ball 40 yards from goal and looked to chip the 'keeper, only to see his fine effort evade the top corner with the 'keeper beaten all hands up.

Malachians thought they had took the lead minutes later as their striker headed home after an inswinging ball from the left flank only for the referee to blow up for offside. Kernaghan went close at the other end, as his shot from the edge of the box sailed over the bar and minutes later the visiting 'keeper had to be alert as he committed himself outside the box to head the ball to safety.

Moneyslane were happy to allow the visiting team to have the ball as they sat back and soaked up the pressure. The visitors hit the woodwork just before half time as their left back cut inside and hit the crossbar from the edge of the Slane box.

The second half started in similar fashion as the first ended. Again the visitors were allowed to have the ball in their own half with Slane applying pressure the minute they crossed the halfway line. Kingsmore was a nuisance to the Mal's rearguard with his tireless running and from one of his runs he was upended just outside the visitors' box.

Kernaghan whipped the ball goalward and it was handled by defender leaving the referee with no choice but to award the penalty kick. Kernaghan stepped up and coolly slotted the ball past the diving 'keeper for the opening goal of the game on 70 minutes.

Ryan McIlroy and Raymond Kidd had to be replaced with David Boyd and Gareth Bingham coming into the game. Both subs worked very hard on the day for the team. The amateur league outfit levelled the scoring minutes after conceding, when their striker fifed a fine effort into the top corner of the Moneyslane net, 1-1.

With the scores level again Slane thought they had a good shout for a second penalty kick as the covering defender appeared to handle again in the box, but the call was waved away by the man in the middle.

This was a great cup tie with both sides working ever so hard and it looked destined for extra time.

Though in the 92nd minute the visitors got in cheaply down the Moneyslane left flank and the cross was fired home from eight yards out to win the game and book the premier league side's place in the next round of this season's Intermediate Cup.
