Bah Humbug for Slane

Wednesday, 21 December 2016

SATURDAY saw the Firsts take the long journey to face undefeated Fivemiletown United in the last fixture before the Christmas break.

Fivemiletown ...2
Moneyslane ...1

The game got underway at a frantic pace with the hosts forcing a number of corners, which Crawford had to punch clear under pressure.

The opening goal of the game came on 10 minutes when from a Fivemiletown corner Slane hit the hosts with a quick counterattack, where Reese beat three defenders before cutting in from the left flank and slotted under the home keeper from a tight angle, 0-1.

Slane had their backs up and had a couple of half chances in the next 10 minutes with Kingsmore and Hainon both testing the home keeper. The big turning point in the first half came on the half hour mark when the home keeper collected the ball from a Kernaghan free kick only to shove Kingsmore to the ground in a rush of blood.

Unbelievably the referee somehow awarded an indirect free kick instead of a penalty. The decision did not go down well with the large Slane support and players. Kernaghan s free kick was blocked well by the wall.

The home side was dangerous on the break, hitting the big target man at every opportunity and it was the big striker who fired wide from a tight angle and the home number 6 also went close from the edge of the area.

With five minutes left to half time Slane should have doubled their lead, when a fantastic corner was glanced over the bar from Slane skipper Ervine from four yards out. The referee blew for half time in what was a very feisty first half. Half time Fivemiletown 0-1 Moneyslane.

Understandably the home side came out with all guns blazing in the second half and forced another couple of corners. It was from one of these that they almost got back into the game, but for some fine Moneyslane defending which saw the ball cleared off the goal line by McLean.

David Crawford made a fantastic save at his near post when he threw himself at the ball when the Fivemiletown number 6 smashed a shot from close range, the big keeper pushed behind for a corner kick.

Moneyslane were always dangerous on the break and it was Withers who was played in by Kingsmore, but his snapshot just evaded the right upright.

Slane made yet another goalscoring opportunity but Ferguson couldn t keep his shot down as he spun in the box and fired over from 10 yards out.

The hosts were playing a lot of long balls into the Slane box where the boys defended well, but on the hour mark from one of these long punts from the home centre back, saw the ball break loose inside the Slane box Hainon tried to clear but caught the United striker as he cleared the ball and the referee awarded the home side a soft penalty kick.

The spot kick was fired into the bottom right corner of Crawford s net 1-1. This was a setback for Slane and only two minutes later the game was turned on its head when Slane lost possession on the edge of the hosts box again. The ball hit the front man early who was clearly offside, but Slane protests were waved away by the referee who was 60 yards away. The striker turned in the box and squared to the midfielder who slotted home from point blank range, 2-1.

Moneyslane pushed hard in the final quarter of the game with the hosts picking up a couple of bookings as they tried to slow the game down. Kernaghan went close from a free kick as Kingsmore was upended just outside the area.

With seven minutes remaining Moneyslane had another huge decision go against them as the hosts centre half handled inside the area, again the referee waved no penalty as tensions started to boil over with Ferguson being left flat out on the deck after another off the ball incident.

The game was coming into its final minutes when a snapshot from Reese from the right-hand side of the box was deflected wide of the hosts right hand post with Slane having no luck at all on the day. Full time Fivemiletown 2-1 Moneyslane.
