Mollie is surprise package at end-of-year show

Wednesday, 4 January 2017

MOLLIE Sheppard produced a masterclass display of boxing at Rathfriland ABC CC's annual end-of-year show last month.
The 12-year-old faced seasoned Dundalk campaigner, Katerina Sidorova (14) from O'Hanlon Park on Sunday, 18 December.
Sheppard controlled all three rounds with perfect straight shots, catching her opponent at will and dropping her to the canvas in round two.
To be fair to Sidorova she kept coming forward looking to land shots of her own, making it a great contest all round. So good was Mollie's display, she lifted Best Home Boxer of the day.
Another top drawer performance in the show came from 13-year-old Daniel Waugh who, although he was under a lot of pressure from Cole Lavery of Gilford ABC, composed himself, found his feetwork and picked some nice shots both going forward and back.
It was a cracking contest in which both lads had to be at their best to avoid any harm being done. Well done to both lads and to Cole Lavery who picked up Best Visiting Boxer.
Other stand-outs on the day in the 14-bout show was Aodhan Cunningham boxing against the very talented Martin Riley from Ardbo Club Loughshore ABC. Aodhan is progressing nicely in the sport and shows a lot of dedication in training.
Lorcan Sloan (15) and possibly the club's top trainer, has improved immensely and proved that in November by lifting an Ulster Novice title. Lorcan proved hard to pin down as he moved well and picked some stiff shots against the ever-improving Ruairi McParland from Gilford ABC.
The club would like to thank O'Hanlon Park, Gilford and Loughshore boxing clubs for making it a great day.
There will be an all-junior show in early February and the coaches would encourage everyone to attend as much as possible to get fit and learn the art of the sport and star in the show in front of their family and friends.
The Christmas draw on Wednesday, 21 December was a great success with a total of 10 prizes given out. From hampers, a mobile clothes line, skip hire and several goodie bags with all types of goodies in them.
Thank you to everyone who supported the draw, which raised a much-needed 550 and to all those who donated the prizes, the club would not survive without your support and generosity.
The second half of the season will be busy with things starting this Saturday, 7 January in Belfast, where Morgan McNulty will box in an Antrim v Cork show.
Three of the novice seniors - Jack McAvoy, Sean Murray and Jamie Curran - will enter the Irish Novice Championship on Friday, 13 January and six boxers, Shay Lavery, Georgia Lavery, Lorcan Sloan, Rory Cunningham, Eoin Murray and Tom Close will enter the Antrim 3s on Monday, 16 January.
Training resumes on Monday, 9 January for juniors from 7pm to 8.15pm and for seniors from 8pm to 9.15pm.
