Car racing season starts this Saturday

Wednesday, 22 March 2017

THE season's opening car race meeting takes place at Kirkistown Racing Circuit, County Down this Saturday, 25 March.

In the lucrative Dawson-WAM NI FF1600 championship, reigning champion, Alan Davidson from Randalstown, will be hoping to get his defence off to a roaring start.

Banbridge man, Arnie Black, is returning in his Crossle 32F. Opposition from further afield comes from Dean McDonald (Scotland), Jake Byrne (Naas) and Kevin O'Hara (Kildare).

There are two races in this class at the meeting and both should be very close fought affairs.

Rivalling the FF1600s, at least in terms of numbers, will be the popular Fiesta Zetec class. Racing is always very close. Jonny Forsythe from Ballymartin, County Down is the 2016 champion and he will be back to defend his crown, while Newry man, Norman Black, will be in the mix as well.

In the Roadsports class, Hugh Webb from Lisburn, returns in a 2.0L Crosslé 42S. He will have to deal with multiple champion Jim Larkham, from Newtownabbey, in his 1.3L Radical PRO6, which should still be the class of the field.

A small Saloon/GT field will feature a couple of the new-for-2017 BMW330i cars which are aiming to develop into a separate class for 2018. Greer Wray, from Lisburn, will be piloting one of these.

Greer has a long history in the saloon class, mostly with Vauxhall Vectras. Downpatrick's Ciaran Denvir will be returning in his extremely quick Honda Civic.

Visiting Southern classes include the Ginetta Juniors, for 14 to 17-year-old drivers and a large field of Formula Sheanes. These always provide close racing. Top drivers, Kevin Sheane and Brian Hearty will be renewing their long rivalry. Racing starts at 11am.
