Mollie edged out in thriller. thumbnail Beaten Irish finalist, Mollie Sheppard.

YOUNG Rathfriland boxer, Mollie Sheppard went agonisingly close to capturing an All Ireland title last Friday evening (19 May).

She put in a tremendous shift against reigning Irish champ, Laura Moran from St Anne's ABC Westport .

The East v West battle started and ended in a frantic pace with both girls picking good shots throughout the contest.

Moran took the first round with Sheppard levelling matters by producing a super second round.

Moran came on strong from the start of the third round, forcing Mollie onto the back foot.

Although under pressure, Mollie was able to get her shots off and produced good footwork to hold Moran off.

At the end of the contest Rathfriland coaches and supporters held their breath as the winner was announced.

Unfortunately it didn't go their way, but everyone was very proud of Mollie's performance and know there is a lot more in this girl.

Training continues Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 7pm to 8.30pm for the senior section, with tournaments coming up in Oliver Plunkett Belfast and Canal ABC Lisburn.
