Barn-storming performance from Whites’ hat-trick heroes thumbnailJonathan Scannell and James Costello were all smiles after they both hit hat-tricks, as Rathfriland Rangers destroyed Barn United in round one of the Irish Cup.

A SPECTACULAR pair of hattricks saw Rathfriland Rangers rout Barn United in round one of the Irish Cup.

Barn United...3
Rathfriland Rangers...8

The Whites trounced their opponents at Haslett Park in Carrickfergus on Saturday, with Jonathan Scannell and James Costello chalking up three goals apiece.

While it might not be rare for one player to score a treble in a game, for two from the same team to do is a remarkable feat.

The six strikes scored by Scannell and Costello were added to by an own goal and a Ross Black header to give the Rangers a comfortable win after an early scare.

Within the opening five minutes, Rathfriland found themselves two goals down, which was something of a surprise against a side sitting two divisions beneath them.

A much-too-casual start to the game was the undoing of the Whites but they pulled one back through Scannell shortly afterwards.

And the scores were levelled up before the half-hour mark when a Barn defender turned the ball into his own goal in what would have been an impressive finish, if only it had been at the other end.

As the Whites built up their momentum, their goal threat increased, with Costello handing them the lead with a wicked strike into the far top cor ner.

A 3-2 lead soon became 4-2, when Scannell doubled his tally when he turned in Jonny Roy's corner at the front post.

Scannell was playing in a more attacking role than usual, slotting in just behind Costello and he looked dangerous every time he had the ball at his tricky feet.

He completed his hat-trick not long after the restart when he drilled one in low past the 'keeper on his weaker right foot.

With his work more than done for the day, Scannell was replaced but Costello continued to terrorise the Barn backline.

As the Barn players started to lose their cool, tackles started to fly in and they began to play a much more physical game.

And it seemed to unsettle the Whites, albeit briefly, as the home side pulled a goal back after a header looped over Rangers 'keeper Shane Harrison and was nudged over the line by the winger.

Costello then got his second with another superb finish, before Ross Black headed in number seven in a goalmouth scramble caused by a Costello cross.

And the striker completed his threegoal haul when he raced through a perfectly placed the ball into the far corner, just beyond the reach of the diving goalie.

The win will please manager Black, but he will have concerns at the shocking start his side made.

Much tougher tests await this week, with a league double-header against rivals Downpatrick, starting with a clash at Iveagh Park on Tuesday at 6.30pm.

Rathfriland Rangers: Shane Harrison, Graeme Edgar, Aaron Black, Ryan Clydesdale, Jonny Black, Jonny Roy, Daryl Evans, Ross Black, Jack Graham, Jonathan Scannell, James Costello.

Subs: Stevie Coulter, Daryll Kernohan, Mark Teggart.
