Camogs are Down champs thumbnailClonduff camogs celebrate their championship win against Ballygalget on Saturday evening (16 September).

SATURDAY, 16 September was championship final day for the senior camogs.

The game was in Downpatrick and the opposition was Ballygalget who were playing in their first final in 49 years.

Conditions were very wet, making the pitch quite slippy for both teams.

Clonduff started very brightly and raced into the lead, Cassie scored a goal and a point and this was quickly followed by a second goal from Katie McGilligan, who got onto the end of a ball in from Clara Cowan.

Clara scored a point and captain Paula Gribben scored three points to put the Yellas up at half time on a scoreline of 2-05 to 0-03. They probably should have been further ahead but for some wides.

They were on top all over the pitch and the Ards team was struggling to get possession. The last score of the half went to Ballygalget.

The referee awarded them quite a dubious free after Clare McGilligan made a brilliant block after the ball came off the post.

The second half was a nerve-wrecking one for the Clonduff supporters, as the girls struggled to win ball and there were several strange refereeing decisions, which saw him award frees to the Ards team which they converted to reduce the gap to three points.

It was almost 20 minutes before the girls scored in the second half and this was a point from Megan O'Reilly.

This settled the nerves and there were points from Orla Gribben and Beth Fitzpatrick to put the gap back out to five. The final score was Clonduff 2-08 Ballygalget 0-09.

This really was a game of two halves in the first half the forwards were first to the ball in every position and the defence was rarely troubled.

However, in the second half the girls struggled to settle and as the game went on, Ballygalget's confidence grew and they hassled and tackled with intent.

Team captain Paula Gribben accepted the cup on behalf of the team and she thanked everyone involved for the effort they have put in throughout the year.

Congratulations to Sara Louise Carr on being named Player of the Match and she was presented with a lovely trophy. Paula also collected the shield for winning the senior league this year.
