Jack lifts first title of the season for Rathfriland BC. thumbnailJack McAvoy

Rathfriland's 75kg Senior Novice boxer, Jack McAvoy was crowned Antrim Novice Champion last Thursday evening (28 September) in Clonard ABC after overcoming St Monica's middleweight, Connor Crimmins in a tough encounter.

Jack controlled the contest from the opening bell with some stiff right hands landing flush on his opponent's chin, forcing the tough St Monica's boxer to retire on his stool at the end of the first round.

Since the club started back on Monday, 4 September Jack has missed only one training session, proving to himself that hard work and being focused on the task in hand pays off.

The club's other entrant in the championship, Shane McKinley boxing at 81kg, boxed Tuesday week ago in the quarter against the tall Micheal Epelding from Holy Family BC, the eventual winner.

The Holy Family boxer forced two standing counts on the unlucky McKinley in the second round with the referee calling a halt to the contest.

The busy start to the season continues with the senior novices up again this Saturday (7 October) in the Ulster Championship.

They also have four of their girl boxers weighing in for the Esker (Dublin) all-female box cup on from 13 to 15 October.

The Belfast Box Cup takes place from 28 to 30 October, when they hope to enter nine boxers.
