Romaine top lady barebow in Britain. thumbnail Romaine Mehaffey finished top in the UK Ladies Barebow category at the weekend.

THE British Barebow championships were shot at the weekend in six separate venues across the UK.

Almost 200 archers shot in the competition. This is an annual event and is unusual in that instead of having one venue in the UK where every archer would have to journey to (expensive) are six venues all over the country where the tournament is shot on the same day and at the same time!

Ballyvally has had the honour of hosting the Northern Ireland venue for the last 13 years.

In the ladies' barebow category, the competition was very close with only three points separating the top three ladies in Britain.

Romaine Mehaffey, of Ballyvally Archers, managed to hold on to her nerve and her early lead after the first dozen to finish tops in the UK with 489 points.

Close behind was Carol-Anne Sez from Scotland on 487 and third was Ballyvally's Angela Cowan on 486 - a close run thing!

In the girls under 18 years, three Ballyvally teenagers did well.

Caoimhe Heaney finished a very good sixth on 392 followed by her sister Sian on 391 (seventh) and then Hollie Teggart on 378 (ninth).

In the men's section the competition was stronger and Sam Jackson only managed to finish 41st (but an improvement over last year), Damien Cunningham finished 44th and Geoff McLoughlin 45th.

The boys under 18 did better with Fraser Leonard finishing second on 379 and Tom Mehaffey third on 376 and Michael Toland fifth on 317.

Ballyvally juniors are now preparing for the NI Junior Indoor championships which will be hosted by Ballyvally on Sunday (10 December) in Banbridge Leisure Centre.

The senior indoor Championships will be hosted by City of Belfast Archers in Boucher Road on Saturday (9 December).

Club Santa shoot Ballyvally Archery Club restarts for 2018 on Wednesday, 3 January and Thursday, 4 January 2018 and new beginners are welcome.
