MAYOBRIDGE survived a late Clonduff rally to progress to the semi-final of the Down Senior Championship in Newry on Friday 7 September, the final scoreline reading 2-16 to 2-15.
In the first half of this game the Bridge were in scintillating form and led at the break by 2-7 to 0-8, with Caolan Gallagher and Cory Quinn being the goalscorers.
Five unanswered points in the opening nine minutes of the second half from Kevin O’Rourke (0-3), Cathal Magee and Kevin McClorey put the Bridge 10 points clear.
Gradually Clonduff began to whittle down the lead and a goal from Karl O’Hagan in the 53rd minute reduced the deficit to just five points to give his side renewed hope.
As the game entered injury time the Sky Blues still held a four-point lead but in the third minute of injury time Arthur McConville hit the net again for Clonduff to leave just a point in the difference.
The Yellas then had a chance to level the game from a 40-metre free but the effort drifted wide much to the relief of the Bridge players and supporters.
