Clonduff camogs are Ulster champions

Ulster Intermediate Final

CLONDUFF faced a tough ask in Moy Tir na nÓg on Saturday afternoon when they once again did battle with Eglish, the reigning champions for the past three years.

Eglish won the toss and elected to play with the very strong breeze behind them. The Yellas took a bit of time to settle and conceded an early goal and this was followed by Schools’ All Star, Clara Cowan retiring with a hamstring injury in the first quarter.

Clonduff scored seven magnificent points against the wind and were a goal adrift at the interval.

The U12 camogs of Clonduff and Eglish played an exhibition game during half time, which Clonduff won 2-1 to 1-1.

Clonduff were fired up and got the first score of the half to which Eglish quickly replied, but from then until the final five minutes it was all Clonduff.

They levelled the game and went two points up before sub, Megan O’Reilly gathered the ball from a rebound and sweetly fired to the back of the net.

That’s how the scores stood, 1-13 to 1-8, until the final five minutes when Eglish’s persistence paid off with a close-range goal leaving two points in it.

Eglish weren’t Ulster Champions for the past three years for nothing. They hassled and harried looking for that all-important goal, but the girls in yellow stood firm and cleared their lines on quite a few occasions.

What a relief when that final whistle sounded! The scenes of jubilation knew no bounds and the large contingent of Clonduff supporters were ecstatic when the cup was presented to ‘Captain Fantastic’ Paula O’Hagan who, just seconds before, had been presented with the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

It would be very remiss not to mention Clonduff’s very own ‘Super Mum’ Karen Haughey. Regular goalkeeper Kitty Fegan sustained a serious knee injury and Karen, her third child just four weeks old, stepped in to the breech and with some expert coaching did a magnificent job in both the County and Ulster finals.

Ten-week-old Cormac was in The Moy to witness this great occasion - hopefully the day’s photographs will make him feel he remembers it.
