A KILKEEL mother and daughter have been bound over to keep the peace after assaulting the mother's ex-husband's new partner outside Asda.

Helen Patricia Trainor, 53, and Orla Trainor, 29, of Abbey Park, were both convicted of common assault at Newry Magistrates' Court.

The court heard that on 22 January this year, at 7.45pm, police spoke to the injured party in the matter and her partner, who told officers they were leaving Asda in Kilkeel when they were both approached by Helen Trainor.

She began a verbal argument with the pair before pushing a shopping trolley towards the injured party's stomach.

A few minutes later, Orla Trainor appeared on the scene and began swinging her arms at them before spitting directly on the victim, who is the new partner of Helen Trainor's ex-husband.

CCTV footage backed up the claims made by the injured party.

Helen Trainor was unrepresented while defence counsel for Orla Trainor said the “offence is set against the backdrop of a difficult and at times strained family relationship” and following the encounter at Asda, there were a “few choice words between the parties”.

Her defence continued: "To her credit, she's not the first defendant on the scene. She comes later after her mother had already been involved.

“She now accepts in the cold light of day that she can't react in this manner.

“It’s evident she does struggle with emotions and overreacts to situations where, on reflection, she would not react in that manner.”

A report was provided to the court on Orla Trainor, who benefits from the assistance of a social worker, with District Judge Eamonn King saying the report “confirms she does understand the difference between right and wrong and on this occasion she overstepped the mark and by her plea of guilty she acknowledges that.

“I’m going to deal with this in a manner that will help Orla manage her emotions going forward.”

He then stated he would bind her over to keep the peace for 12 months on a sum of £250.

The same sentence was also passed in relation to Helen Trainor.
