AFTER reflecting on two major losses in his family, chairman of Banbridge Boxing Club, Martin Casey has decided to take on the challenge of running his first ever marathon at 55-years-old.

While training to participate in this year's Belfast Marathon, Martin has set up an online fundraiser for two charities that have supported his family in the past.

Already, the fundraiser has garnered a wave of support with thousands of pounds being raised for charity.

Speaking to The Outlook, Martin explained how the idea came about, saying: “I don't consider myself to be a 'runner', but it is the main exercise I would do.

“Over the last couple of years, I've been running a little bit further but it's nothing close to a marathon distance.

“Like everyone, I was down with the cold at Christmas and was just planning to get back into it, so I had it in my head to start going for a longer run at the weekends.

“Normally I go along the canal towpath and one of the days I was out, my mind started to drift and I was thinking about doing the marathon and I knew if I did it, I'd want to raise funds for a cause.

“As I continued running along and considering what charities I could support, I started to think about my nephews."
